Purpose, Test Method, Rating System, and Why It Matters

The cross-cut test, also known as the cross hatch test, grid test, or cross-cut adhesion test, is a standardized method used to evaluate the adhesion strength of coatings or coating systems.

In the stainless steel tumbler and bottle industry, this test is widely applied to assess how well spray paint, powder coating, or printed logos bond to the stainless steel substrate.

It is a fundamental but critical quality control test, often used together with dishwasher testing and abrasion testing to verify coating reliability.

Below, we explain the cross-cut test from a factory perspective, in a way that is clear and practical for buyers.

What Is the Cross-Cut (Cross Hatch) Test?

The cross-cut test evaluates coating adhesion by intentionally cutting through the coating layer to disrupt the interface between the coating and the metal substrate.

A series of uniform, intersecting cuts is made on the coating surface, forming a grid pattern (typically 25 or 100 small squares). Adhesive tape is then applied and removed to observe whether the coating detaches at the cut intersections.

In simple terms, the test answers one key question:

Will the coating remain firmly bonded to a stainless steel tumbler or bottle under mechanical stress?

This makes the cross-cut test a direct indicator of coating adhesion quality.

Why Cross-Cut Testing Is Important for Stainless Steel Bottles

For stainless steel tumblers and bottles, the cross-cut test is used to verify:

  • Spray-painted surface adhesion

  • Powder coating bonding strength

  • Logo printing durability

  • Overall surface treatment stability

If a product fails the cross-cut test, common issues include:

  • Paint peeling from minor scratches

  • Coating lifting after dishwasher cleaning

  • Large-area coating loss during normal use

For this reason, cross-cut testing is typically a mandatory inspection item before mass production or shipment.

Standard Cross-Cut Test Method for Tumblers and Bottles

Test Tools

  • Cross-cut cutter (cross hatch cutter)

  • Typical blade spacing: 1 mm or 2 mm

  • Standard adhesive tape (3M or equivalent)

Test Procedure (Standard Operation)

  1. Select a representative test area on the coated tumbler or bottle surface

  2. Use the cutter to make 10 parallel vertical cuts

  3. Make 10 parallel horizontal cuts, forming 100 small squares

  4. Ensure the cuts penetrate the coating without damaging the stainless steel substrate

  5. Apply adhesive tape firmly over the grid

  6. Remove the tape quickly at a 180-degree angle

  7. Inspect the coating for flaking or detachment

Cross-Cut Test Classification Ratings

According to international standards such as ISO 2409 and ASTM D3359, cross-cut adhesion performance is classified into six levels, from 0B to 5B.

The higher the rating, the stricter the adhesion requirement.

Common Rating Definitions (Simplified)

4B Very slight flaking at intersections (<5%) Acceptable
3B Small flakes along cut lines (5–15%) Borderline

👉 In practice, most export-grade stainless steel tumblers and bottles require 4B–5B.
If a customer specifies 5B, it means no coating detachment is allowed.

Factors That Affect Cross-Cut Test Results

When cross-cut testing fails, it is rarely accidental. Common root causes include:

  • Inadequate stainless steel surface preparation (poor degreasing or insufficient roughening)

  • Incorrect or missing primer application

  • Insufficient curing temperature or curing time

  • Coating materials incompatible with stainless steel bottles or tumblers

  • Surface contamination from oil, moisture, or dust

Cross-cut testing therefore reflects the overall reliability of the surface coating process, not just the coating material itself.

Relationship Between Cross-Cut Testing and Dishwasher Testing

These two tests are closely connected in the stainless steel drinkware industry:

  • Cross-cut test → verifies initial coating adhesion

  • Dishwasher test → verifies long-term durability under heat and detergent exposure

A common factory logic is:

Pass the cross-cut test first → then proceed with dishwasher testing

If a tumbler or bottle fails the cross-cut test, it is highly likely to fail dishwasher testing as well.

What Cross-Cut Testing Means for Buyers

From a buyer’s perspective, cross-cut testing ensures that:

  • Logos on tumblers and bottles do not peel easily

  • Coatings resist edge lifting and flaking

  • Products remain durable in long-term daily use

  • After-sales and warranty risks are reduced

This is why many OEM and private-label buyers clearly specify cross-cut adhesion ratings during sampling and approval stages.
